Everyone Tells You to Reduce Stress. No One Tells You How.

Everyone Tells You to Reduce Stress. No One Tells You How.

'Everyone tells me to reduce stress, yet no one tells me how.'

I have heard that sentence more than almost any other in my 20 years of teaching, and it is a fair statement. 'Reduce stress' is not advice. It is a wish, handed to a woman who is already doing too much.

So let me tell you what is actually happening, because the mechanism is more useful than the instruction.

A nervous system stuck in survival keeps cortisol and inflammation running high, and that keeps the immune system on alert. That same stress response reaches your gut too: cortisol shapes how the gut barrier holds and how the immune system behaves, so an activated nervous system and an inflamed gut are rarely 2 separate problems. Teaching your body that the danger has passed, that it is safe again, is part of the physiology of Autoimmune healing.

Moving your Autoimmune 'toward remission' looks like a nervous system that has finally gotten the message that the danger has passed, and can stop bracing, the tight shoulders, the shallow breath, the readiness for something to go wrong that never quite switches off. It knows how to rest, to breathe deep into the belly instead of shallow into the chest, to slow down into something closer to a parasympathetic, rest-and-digest state, not fight-or-flight, not as a reward you earn.

Moving your Autoimmune 'away from remission' looks like a body stuck in chronic alarm, and that is a very hard place to heal from. This does not usually look like fear. It looks like a body that cannot tell a real threat from an ordinary Tuesday, a jaw that stays tight, thoughts that race at 2 a.m., an exhale that never quite finishes even when nothing is actually wrong.

Rest, breath, sleep, and slowing down are part of the protocol, every bit as much as the gut healing component is, not something you 'earn' after the real work is done. This Key is where your body slowly gets the message that the danger has passed, and it is finally safe enough to stop bracing.

Take a moment now, if you are somewhere you can.

Just notice your regular inhales and exhales for a moment. Then, on any inhale, draw the breath in deep, all the way down into your belly, and let the exhale run long and slow. That slow 'belly breath' is a signal of safety to your nervous system, and it lets the whole body settle.

That slow exhale is one of the most potent ways to bring calm to a very big nerve in your body called the vagus nerve, and it does it quickly. The next time your chest tightens, before a hard conversation, in a waiting room, lying awake at 2 a.m., that slow exhale is available to you right there. Your body already knows what to do with that breath.

What actually moves this

Qigong is one of your movement practices in the Autoimmune Recovery Method, and here in Calm & Resilience it does double duty: the same gentle practice that moves your body also settles your nervous system.

I also teach a method called 'Effortless Meditation.' It is so accessible that no one comes away saying they cannot do meditation, or that they cannot meditate. It meets you EXACTLY where you are, whether that is calm or wired, rested or exhausted. There is no posture to get right and no 'good' session to chase, only showing up.

And sleep: protected like it matters, a big topic we cover fully in the course, because it is where all of your repair happens.

Clearly, I cannot hand you a full nervous system protocol in a single article. A practice you learn incorrectly, alone, off a page, is a practice that does not stick around. This is the Key that, to really land, needs to be received live.

1 more thing, and it is a word I prefer.

I am not much of a fan of the phrase 'self care.' I prefer 'self stewardship.' A steward tends their land, and all of this work in the Autoimmune Recovery Method is stewardship of yourself. A steward is looking after something they intend to keep, long term. That is what all of this curriculum is.

This is the Key that surprises the most people once they are actually in it, live, in ARM Foundations.

I remember the day I lived in a chronic state of stress. I was a high-functioning, productive, busy person, and I was also experiencing headaches, exhaustion, hair loss, brain fog, and tremendous joint pain. Fast forward to where I am today, living vibrantly with Hashimoto's, and I experience literally none of those symptoms. That is not because my life got easy. It did not. It is because I live what I teach.
