The soda you make from 2 roots and a lemon

A homemade soda with real bite is a genuine pleasure, and this one earns its place at the table. You blend 2 fresh roots with honey and lemon, strain it, and top it with sparkling water, and the result has real character, sharp, bright, and satisfying on its own terms.

Ginger and turmeric are the heart of it, used here as fresh root rather than powder, which gives a brighter, sharper drink. Both roots carry polyphenols, plant compounds studied for their role in the body's inflammatory response. This is gentle, supportive food, not a cure, and it is worth making a habit of.

Pour it over ice and notice the color, that deep gold the turmeric gives the glass. Adjust the sparkling water to taste, more for a softer drink, less for a stronger one, and drink it slowly enough to actually taste the roots. The few minutes you spend making it are part of the pleasure.

Ingredients

  • 2 inches fresh turmeric root
  • 2 inches fresh ginger root
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Sparkling water, to fill
  • Ice

All ingredients are AIP Core compliant as written. No swaps needed. Handle the fresh turmeric with care, it stains.

Method

Add the turmeric root, ginger root, the 1/3 cup water, the honey, and the lemon juice to a blender. Blend until everything is broken down and combined.

Strain the blended mixture through a fine strainer into two glasses, pressing to get the liquid out and leaving the fibrous pulp behind.

Add ice to each glass and top with sparkling water. Use more sparkling water for a milder drink and less for a stronger, more intense one.
