AIP pineapple-grapefruit digestive tonic - grapefruit, frozen pineapple, water, and lemon blended into a morning drink

Mornings are usually the easiest window in the day to add one more supportive habit, before the day's demands take over, and a heavy, sluggish feeling after eating is common enough on this path that it's worth having something simple to reach for. This tonic is that something: whole fruit, blended, nothing manufactured.

What's blended together is grapefruit and pineapple with water and lemon. The fruit is a source of fiber, which supports the gut microbes doing a lot of quiet immune work, along with vitamin C. Pineapple's bromelain and grapefruit's effect on stomach acid get credited sometimes as digestive helpers, though that's not settled science, so hold it loosely and let the flavor be the main reason you're drinking it. One caution outweighs the rest and needs to travel with this recipe every time: grapefruit interacts with a long list of medications, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before this becomes a habit if you take anything regularly. Citrus and pineapple can also stir up histamine for some people, so this isn't the choice for a strict low-histamine plan even though it's AIP-compliant.

This is whole fruit, ripened and real, and it's genuinely pretty in the glass, gold and pale, a little frothy at the top. Make it, take a moment to actually see it, and drink it while it's cold.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium grapefruit, peeled and pith removed
  • 1 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/2 cup filtered water or coconut water
  • juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • optional add-ins: fresh mint, basil, lime, or mandarin

Method

Peel the grapefruit and remove the white pith, then break it into segments.

Add the grapefruit, frozen pineapple, water or coconut water, and lemon juice to a blender, along with any optional herbs or extra citrus.

Blend until smooth and frothy. Drink it right away.

A note on timing: the author suggests drinking it about 15 minutes before a meal so it has a chance to settle. Treat that as a gentle habit, not a clinical instruction.

This is a blended drink, so it needs no air fryer or Instant Pot variation.
